In the Monkey King legends the Monkey King is asked to stand
watch over the Jade Emperor’s sacred peaches that give immortality
to those who eat them. Monkey King can’t help himself and
before too long is stealing the peaches. That is until the Jade
Emperor catches him.
At the Children’s Museum of Manhattan there is a wall cut
out and painted to look like a peach tree. In the tree are eight
hemispherical glowing magic peaches. When these peaches are touched,
a musical phrase is heard. If enough peaches are touched (“picked”)
then the peaches go dark and the Emperor appears (mechanically)
and in a loud booming voice scolds the peach pickers and tells them
to leave! Eventually the Emperor goes away, the lights in the peaches
return and the game begins anew.
