Using a touch screen, the visitor chooses one of four pearls,
then glides on a virtual slider to magnify. The microscopic views
appear on a 50” plasma screen mounted at eye level. As the
user zooms seamlessly in, the micro and macro structures of the
pearl are made obvious. In this rare circumstance, research data
is stitched together to provide the public with an intelligible
point of reference and simple means of accessing the deep structure
of pearls. Combining microscopy, animation and high-resolution presentation
formats, we have created a unique and exciting experience. The physical
format of this piece is unusual, and the content in combination
with the delivery is unprecedented. Nowhere is research equipment
used to deliver raw content to the public in a more effective way.
