Judy and Josh Weston Pavilion armillary. This armillary sculpture
was designed for the American Museum of Natural History Columbus
St. entrance and fabricated by ART. Traditional armillaries were
used to demonstrate the motion of celestial bodies as viewed from
Earth and as an educational tool for navigation. A culture that
aspires to interstellar travel would require a new coordinate system
so this aluminum and stainless steel sculpture was designed with
the Milky Way galaxy at its center and positioned to demonstrate
New York City's galactic address-its precise location-on January
1, 2000.
