Matthew Ritchie is known for his complex and fanciful representations
of evolution, information, the universe, science and life, typically
executed on large canvases and walls. In this artwork Matthew has
moved into the realm of the digital and leaves the visuals in the
hands of the visitor. In a room surrounded by projections, is a
craps table with the dimensions of a coffin and an artistic game
interface projected onto it from above. To play or evolve the “game”
the visitor must cast a pair of dice in the traditional shape of
the astragal (an ankle bone found in cervids - or hoofed animals)
onto the game table. The animations change and evolve depending
on the roll of the dice slowly revealing some truth about the chance
operations of evolution while making the digital tapestry ever more
rich and engaging.
